It was a dark stormy night, and I was tired. Ready to head off to sleep, the storm finally broke, and I headed out with my dog in tow. She seemed just as tired as I was, but then something changed.
I heard a hiss that sounded like someone released the pressure from a pressure cooker and saw something small run into the corner of my back porch. I quickly brought my dog back in, turned on the porch light and went outside to investigate.
Once I walked outside, I was greeted by a tiny, orange, blue-eyed, tiger-striped kitten not much bigger than the palm of my hand. The spirited little guy was quite gaunt, and clearly malnourished.
Now, I’m not a cat lover, but I wasn’t about to chase off this little kitten that was clearly friendly, and probably wouldn’t make it given his current condition. Now comes the expensive part.
I open the door and say “honey, I think you should come out here and see this.” I knew what my words meant, this was a commitment. What’s a guy to do though?
Kitten Encounters of the Wife Kind
She came out and was greeted by the little purring kitten with the heart of a lion and I knew these 3 things:
- We are probably keeping him.
- He probably needs to go to the veterinarian.
- It will probably cost about $150 bucks. (HAHAHAHAHA!)
My wife brought out some cat treats which he ate out of her hand vigorously, and sounded like an outboard motor while doing so. My wife spent the rest of the night tending to the kitten, and trying to keep our curious dog and cat away.
Stray Kitten Costs
My wife took the kitten to the veterinarian the next day, and I was surprised to find that the bill came to $262.00! Apparently, being out in stormy weather can give a kitten an upper-respiratory infection. While it was an expensive walk, the kitten is now happy, healthy, and enjoying life with my awesome family.
What is the Kitten’s Name?
Ordinarily, names can be a pretty boring thing, but I’m not a boring person so we had to come up with an epic name. Our kitten is a male, so I found it only befitting to name him… wait for it: Mike Wazowski. In case you’re wondering, yes, that is the name of green monster from Pixar’s Monsters Inc.
My wife and I both really enjoyed that film, and I really enjoy the looks I get when people find out that my cat is named Mike Wazowski. Mike Wazowski has brought a lot of joy to our lives, and while I might not have been super enthusiastic about the bills, he’s definitely a fun guy to have around the house.
This is an excellent example of why you need to have money set aside in savings. I never would have guessed that taking my dog for a walk that moment would result in an extra $262 in costs. You never know what will happen when you literally step outside your door!
