Countless people fall victim to the idea that they’ll finally retire by starting a website that will earn them thousands of dollars each night as they sleep. You’ve probably seen the infomercials:
- Buy real estate for pennies on the dollar.
- Property flipping with no risk.
- eBay Millions in Minutes.
- Make money while you sleep.
- Turn your computer into a money-making machine!
- Start a drop shipping business.
The list goes on. If you want to see the latest schemes, just wait until about 2 AM and turn on your favorite channel. This isn’t to say that there aren’t successful businesses that can follow any of these models, but I want to tackle the “easy” part of this subject.
I’ve always enjoyed seeing the men on the screen shouting about how easy it is to make money while they are waving wads of cash. You too can know the secrets – if you purchase their system. Did you ever ask yourself “if the system is so good, why are they selling it?”
Why Sell The System?
With the thousands of dollars these guys claim you could be earning each day, why would they sell this system? Why wouldn’t they hire more employees to continue executing the system on their behalf? If you had a way of making the quantities of money they talk about, would you sell it for a few hundred dollars?
Would you rather sell the system, or hire employees? Would you rather sell the system, or give it away for free, but share the profits with the people who used the system? There are so many things wrong with the logic, it’s hard to find a place to start!
Math Problems
The other problem I have is with the numbers they claim. Based on some of the earnings statistics, you should appear on the Forbes 500 World’s Richest People list, but I’ve yet to see any of these people on the list. Not only do I not see people using the system on the list, but the list also tends to be devoid of the “proven system” founders as well.
The Forbes 500 list aside, the fuzzy math on some of these “systems” also should be brought to light. The easiest ones are the “systems” that claim you can double your money indefinitely. If such a system existed, it would be shut down by the government immediately because it would pose a threat to the financial stability of the country. You would usurp the entire money supply in a few short years.
Other systems claim ridiculous sums of money that are still feasible (in terms of not usurping the economy), but still entirely unlikely for what you are doing. Of course, these claims are protected under the guise of the words “results not typical” floating at the bottom of your television screen. Just remember: if it sounds too good to be true, then it probably is.
Don’t Believe Infomercials
Running a business isn’t easy, whether it be a brick and mortar, or it be a website. As a worst case scenario, you should not expect to make any profit your first year. I tell this to people so they don’t get discouraged after 6 months of breaking even, or worse, losing money. It takes time to establish a presence (especially online!) and it takes a ton more patience to build a sustainable customer base to live on.
Don’t expect your website to be an overnight success, and don’t expect people driving by to break their routine of going to the grocery store, just to stop at your deli. You’ll need to give customers a reason to come in, and it will take time to convince them. Who knows, maybe you will get lucky and be an instant success, but not only will I not guarantee that, but I’ll guarantee that un-guarantee. I GUARANTEE IT!
